WXLLSPACE brought Dutch muralist Marcus Debie to Smyrna, Georgia, to transform Building 7000 at Prestwick Companies' The Series at Riverview with a 480 SQFT nature-themed landmark. The project moved from artist selection in January 2023 through city approvals and international logistics coordination to successful installation in March 2023. Debie's design celebrates local Georgia ecology—the Pine Warbler bird and Jonquil flower—integrated with abstract water movement elements echoing the nearby Chattahoochee River. The mural established the residential development as a cultural destination within the Riverview Landing district and generated measurable organic search engagement.

The Space

Challenge

Prestwick Companies sought to differentiate The Series at Riverview in a competitive multifamily market by transforming a blank facade into a high-visibility cultural asset. The challenge extended beyond artist selection to include international talent coordination, municipal approval navigation, and technical execution at height.

The core complications:

  • The development required an artist with international prestige and portfolio depth to justify the investment in a new construction property with limited leasing history
  • The location demanded sensitivity to local environmental identity and alignment with adjacent community anchors (Chattahoochee Riverkeeper)
  • Installation at 40 feet required specialized lift equipment, safety certification, and coordination with an international artist unfamiliar with U.S. construction site protocols
  • City of Smyrna mural ordinances required formal council approval and design review before installation could proceed
  • Logistics for an artist based in the Netherlands required travel, accommodations, materials sourcing, and equipment procurement planning.

The Artist

Constraints

International Coordination

Marcus Debie, while a highly respected artist from the EU, required coordination across time zones, travel arrangements, materials sourcing, and lodging. The artist's international status meant limited familiarity with U.S. site protocols, safety standards, and municipal processes. WXLLSPACE managed all logistics and scheduling to ensure seamless on-site execution.

High-Altitude Installation

The 40-foot wall height required boom lift equipment and safety certification. Installation could not proceed without proper equipment rental, operator training, and safety protocols. The artist required briefing on U.S. lift safety standards and certification before work could begin.

Municipal Approval

City of Smyrna mural ordinances required formal council review and approval of the design concept. The approval timeline compressed the design phase and created a critical path dependency: design approval must precede permit issuance, which must precede equipment rental and artist travel scheduling.

Design Clarification and Alignment

Initial site estimates indicated wall height up to 50 feet. Final measurements clarified actual working dimensions as 40 feet by 12 feet. This adjustment required design revision and municipal resubmission. The design also needed to align with local environmental themes (Pine Warbler, Jonquil flower) to satisfy both owner and city objectives.

Equipment and Materials

Specialized materials (NC-Acrylic Montana Gold paints) needed to be sourced and staged in advance. Boom lift rental required booking in a compressed timeline to align with artist availability and approved installation window.

The WXLLSPACE Process

January 10, 2023: Artist Selection and Proposal Evaluation

WXLLSPACE reviewed multiple artist proposals against Prestwick's brief and development objectives. Marcus Debie, a highly respected European muralist, was selected based on portfolio strength, scale experience, and alignment with the development's cultural positioning. Debie's proposal was identified as the winning submission for the project.

January 23, 2023: Design Approval and Municipal Submission

Design concepts were finalized and approved by Prestwick's ownership team. The approved design package—incorporating Pine Warbler and Jonquil flower imagery with abstract water movement elements—was submitted to City of Smyrna for formal council review and mural ordinance compliance.

February-Early March 2023: Municipal Approval and Logistics Coordination

City of Smyrna Council approved the mural proposal. Concurrently, WXLLSPACE coordinated international logistics including travel booking, lodging arrangements, boom lift rental, materials procurement, and site safety briefing for the artist.

March 9-18, 2023: Installation

Marcus Debie executed the installation across the scheduled 10-day window. The boom lift provided access to the full 40-foot height. Application methods and specific daily timeline details are not documented in available project records.
